B.tox is rapidly becoming popular in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming a grooming necessity for many in the Harbour City. Nevertheless I am often startled by the amount of myths and half truths which have originated in connection with this procedure.

Here are a selection of the myths which we come across day in day out in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.

Myth # 1: I could lose my facial expressions!

Below the skin of the face are sixty or so muscles. The excessive use of these muscles may cause fine lines or wrinkles. When an excess of B.tox is injected facial expression can sometimes become a liile bit less taut. More often than not physicians use comparatively small doses to are calculated to make you look well rested, however you will continue to be every bit as expressive.

So by injecting a carefully measured quantity of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right areas one can achieve a reduction in the lines without compromising facial expression.

Myth # 2: B.tox is a toxin!
Actually there is a grain of truth in this argument. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In large doses it can result in loss of muscle tone and may make you really ill.

But to help you understand the reality of the situation: a well-known pharmacy expression states that ‘everything is a poison - all depending on the dose’. All drugs might make an individual very sick in large doses. If you drink too great a quantity of water it will be fatal.

Myth # 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor only uses hypodermic needles finer than human hair. Several people compare the treatments to a bug bite. For Certain not as bad as having a vaccination.

Myth # 4: I will lose feeling in my face!
This is completely untrue. B.tox acts on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax muscles is impacted by B.tox.

Myth # 5. You can’t stop having B.tox otherwise the lines and wrinkles become more pronounced!
Again this is just false.

Botox is thought to last for up to three months. Any injections after the initial consultation should last a few weeks longer. The lines will gradually return as the muscle returns to normal. However they will definitely not be any worse than when you began.

Even if you don’t have B.tox ever again - any wrinkles will in all likelihood be a little better than if you had not undergone the procedure. This, of course is obviously because you have allowed your skin to have a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
